Sir Thomas Wyatt’s poem, They Flee From Me, uses some Petrarchan love convention features but make some transformation depicts how men are controlling instead of being gentle.
Thomas Wyatt’s poem is written in a sonnet structure showing the increase of a woman’s power which is a traditional Petrarchan love poetry style . in the first stanza of the poem; the narrator explains how the woman behave around him . in his narration, Wyatt voices his disappointment by his lover who he feels doe not love him as the constant visits have ended. he believes she ignored him and avoided him “flee from him.”
He implies that before their love faded, the woman could even come to his bedroom, hoping to engage him sexually. He describes the woman as gentle when stalking him, but after having his attention, the woman becomes wild. In this stanza, Wyatt uses Petrarchan love convention describing the women as beautiful using analogies of nature. He describes the women as ” “gentle, tame and meek” who have turned to be now “wild.”
“now are wild and do not remember”. He uses expressions related to animals to show how cruel the woman has become. He compares the woman with an animal being hunted who put themselves in danger to get food. The image of an animal is a common metaphor used by Petrarch. For him, his loved one had forgotten the excellent moments they shared and is now seeking food from someone
The second stanza
Wyatt Talkabout a special occasion in the second stanza, he describes a specific woman who stalked him ” with naked foot n his narration Wyatt uses stalking to mean that the women hunted him, why is opposed to the traditional Petrarchan love where men hunted women. In this stanza, the woman is not wild, but as a hunter, as he lures him with respect. For him, these are one of the
pleasurable memories of the past that proves that he ah d experienced real love.
For some reason, the women who sought after him have disregarded him. Although he feels disappointed, he comforts himself that he experienced happiness which is not a dram like in other poems. He describes the relationship with the woman as luck, not mutual love .the changing nature of the relationship reveal the woman is not as pure as describes in other Petrarchan narrative s. she caught him and kissed him calling the women as
“guise” and “newfangleness” he implies that the women are wearing a disguise and after getting what they want, they move to the next man. Wyatt opposes the notion that portrays women as perfect lovers meaning they are attainable Wyatt’s poem is bout despair and bitterness unlike other Petrarch that focus on hope and the desire for love.
Thomas Wyatt’s poem also opposes the traditional Petrarchan narrative when describing men . the men desire for women if not as profound as for the women .women chase after him. Still, in his people, he let go of the woman.
Wyatt opposes the notion of male lovers as imperfect because of their desire for the woman. When he brings back the readers to the current time and reality of his encounter with a woman, not in his dream but real life. His narration implies that he is biter when use uses words like being gentle and kind but was not appreciated . as this woman was quickly carried away by something new . he reveals the fickleness of the woman and resolves not to do the same any more. He states that he is compiled by the situation to be kind but dismisses the woman character degrading In the final lines, the believes he had been too sweet and realizes his mistake further blaming no one but himself for the situation.
The narrator seems to asserts that he is a lucky man because he had the opportunity to experience true love by having a sexual encounter with his huntress. He recalls several situations where a woman had seduced him with “her loose gown” falling “from her shoulders”. The woman grabbed him and kissed him telling him to sweat word ‘Dear heart, how like you this?'”
