Autobiography
My experience in therapy changed my life. Therapy has always been something that gave me peace. It has also been instrumental in bringing about change to cope with different stages of my life.In particular, the Reproductive Life Stages at Women’s College Hospital changed my life. The program provides assessment and short-term treatment for women experiencing new or recurrent mental health problems, including anxiety and depression.It also offers a combination of education and psychotherapy to assess and treat these women.I met my current Psychiatrist at this program, and everything changed. I had been to therapy before, but it was not as transformative as this experience. I am thankful I found someone that could finally help me.I hope to be this person for others one day.In pursuit of this goal, I have started to enhance my knowledge about human behavior. I did a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy course this past year, and I am currently doing a Trauma Certificate that will be completed by Summer 2020. While pursuing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, I gained insight into how thoughts and feelings influence health conditions and behaviors. I was particularly interested in how thoughts exacerbate mental health conditions. Through this course, I developed an understanding of human thoughts, emotions, and behavior. I also realized that my interest lies in Psychotherapy.
My interest in understanding human thoughts and feelings
My interest in understanding human thoughts and feelings started at a young age. I was born in Karachi Pakistanand adopted at four weeks old to Pakistani-Canadian parents. I grew up in Canada in a nuclear family consisting of my parents, brother, and sister. Growing up, I developed separation anxiety that reoccurred throughout my childhood. These concepts of separation anxiety were utterly foreign, as I was growing up in a home with immigrant parents. I knew that there was something wrong, and I had the resources to find out what it was. Moreover, I did not want to live this way anymore.I started seeing a psychiatrist to understand my feelings and experiences. Much of my childhood experiences involved a sense of abandonment, which took me years of therapy to understand. I learned that my childhood experience of being adopted had created a fear of abandonment, which gave me separation anxiety. This discovery also sparked my interest in mental health.
As a result of my childhood experiences, I wanted to help others learn from their past childhood experiences. I wanted to offer counseling to assist others in transitioning through life’s different phases. In this regard, I chose to study Career and Work Counseling because it was a good starting point. The insights gained would assist me in helping people to start new chapters of their lives by finding out about their passion. In summary, I wanted to assist them in achieving their career goals.
These career objectives were fulfilled as I was assisting teenagers to modify their behaviors. When I graduated from York University, I got a job at a Mental Health Treatment center working with adolescent boys and girls. I started working at The Boys Houseto care for eight boys aged between thirteen to eighteen years old. The boys were experiencing emotional and behavioral difficultiesthat were treated through medication, counseling, and crisis intervention. The boys’ treatment program also entailed individual and group therapy.It allowed both the parent and child to get a break and work on their individual goals separately. The separation was needed because the parents were having difficulties taking care of their children. Afterward, I was transferred to the Girls House. The approach to treatment was based ona clinical discussion to coordinate all aspects of treatment jointly with the clients, their families, a social worker, and a clinician.Overall, the treatment programs focused on a clinical understanding of the boys’ and girls’behaviors and symptoms to develop specific treatment plans. These experiences allowed me to understand different approaches to behavioral change.
I also helped families in transition from conflict situations. After my role in the Girls House, I was promoted to Supervised Access. The new role entailed coordinating supervised Access for the York region, which had four locations, as The Ministry of the Attorney General’s office had one Coordinator per region. Therefore,I managed a team of fourteen staff, four volunteers, two placement students,and the families in the program.The role involved overseeing Supervised visitation that gave parents in high conflict or high risk situations access to their children in a safe and supervised environment. The job mainly involved working with the couples and establishing a plan, which was suitable for all parties. It was also challenging because the traumatized couples were reluctant to start the program. I ensured marriage and family therapy were provided to help these families feel safe and heard so they could start the program. Afterward, the parents were positive about the program and willing to start a new chapter of their lives that would help in rebuilding their family.
Collaboration with others
I also collaborated with Probation officers, Children’s Aid Workers, Lawyers, and Psychiatrists when working with these families. The collaboration helped in ensuring informed decisions were made regarding the wellbeing of these families. This experience taught me the significance of family and marriage therapy in influencing behavioral change.
Based on my experiences, I have become a highly motivated and dedicated individual. I have also developed a desire to assist others using the skills I have acquired. Moreover, I have faced the challenges of being in therapy and not getting the needed treatment. This has further motivated me to learn about psychotherapy and use these skills to give my patients the right treatment. Additionally, I have realized my continued interest in counseling and therapy. After talking to some colleagues, friends, and researching, I found that Laurier University offers excellent programs. My desire to help others made me apply to the psychotherapy program. While there, I plan to contribute to the research interest of the department. I also plan to use psychotherapy to help troubled teenagers change their behaviors. Having worked with teenagers and parents going through high conflict divorces, I will be extremely helpful.Given the opportunity, I am excited to take the first step towards a professional career in psychotherapy.
