“The Two Fridas”
Frida Kahlo’s paintings are inseparable from herself. Frida projected Mexican history in her artwork. Born in 1907 and facing a challenging life experience, she turned to paintings reflecting her own life which would be a mirror to all other women in Mexico subjected to the same cultural antiquities in Mexico. Frida Kahlo started to paint in the year 1926. At the point she was starting to paint, she was in bed as a result of injuries she got from a bus accident. Notably, the art was painted in 1939. From the art, one can deduce the fact that Frida has two personalities which are different from the other. Frida’s different characters are asserted by the paint that depicts Frida as a traditional being wearing Tehuana costume. The costume vividly displays Frida having heart-broken. She is sitting next to another Frida who appears to be dressed in modern clothes and very independent (Dadvar, et al., 13)
Attesting to this art, Frida states that the painting emanated from her brain. She thought of the imagery part then came out to put the thought into actions. Having her memory of a friend whom she had from childhood, she saw it wise to produce the art. Besides, Frida later confirms that to a better part, the art depicts her state of being lonely and desperate. The loneliness and desperation are as a result of the divorce that she had just got from the husband (Latimer, 46).
Just an explanation about the two Fridas, the arts are painted to be holding hands. Frida paints the arts in a manner that the audience will be able to see the hearts of the individual Frida. Notable, the heart of Frida, who appears to be traditional, is broken; cut and torn open (Bán, Zsófia, & Tucker, 31). There is a surgical pincer which the traditional Frida has held it on her lap. Ideally, this surgical pincer is used to cut open the main artery running from the right hand. With the cut artery, Frida risks death since she may bleed to death. The blood drips on her dress which appears to be white. Also, behind the arts, there is seen a stormy sky full of agitated clouds. This sky and clouds may assert the turmoil that Frida undergoes from inside.
The painting was taken by a Mexican institution called Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Institute of fine arts. It was in 1947 when the institute acquired this painting (Dadvar, et al., 19). They purchased the painting using 4000 pesos, an equivalent of about l000 Us dollar. The institute also incurred about 36 Pesos for the frame. Notably, the amount paid was the highest ever, done in Frida’s painting in her life. The painting has been reproduced and preserved in the Frida Kahlo Museum in Coyoacan found in Mexico (Burrus, 15).
The critics of Frida’s work
The critics of Frida’s work view her in an artistic point of view and refer to her as introverted person psychoanalytically ( Dadvar, et al., 15). Notably of the 143 arts made by Frida, 54 are self-portraits. Notably, Frida grew up in a harsh environment. Her life experience was very harsh. Most of her paintings were attributed to her life experience; from her ailment with polio when she was six years, to the bus crash when she was eighteen. She survived and returned to normality, but her mind and body remained affected deep inside. The critics point at Frida’s art as one which is reflecting on the sufferings that women undergo. The critics thus refer to her paintings as feminine narcissism which the rough life experienced by women depicts itself in the painting. For example, the first biographical book was written by art critic, Raquel Tibos reconfirms Kahlo as one who uses a radical approach in the portrayal of women. In these paintings, Fidas mostly swung with the cultural tides in Mexico. The fact that Frida’s paintings are much associated with women’s suffering, which stands out to be the point of focus. All the women’s sufferings are best represented in Frida’s arts. When a researcher sought to research about the Mexican culture and its effects on the female gender, h or she will tend to focus more on Frida’s arts which speaks a lot on that.
In conclusion, most of Frida’s work comes from the experiences she faced in Mexico during her lifetime. The Two Fridas is a painting done in 1939 resulting from the just occurred separation between Frida and her husband. She claims that art is a reflection of the memory from a childhood friend. However, Frida’s critics criticize her from the fact that the paintings depict more of females’ struggles; thus, feminine narcissism discussed more.
