Leaders play a critical role in the functioning of a company. With good leadership, any organization can rise and become an icon in its relevant field. Leaders need to continue increasing their leadership capacity to handle the tasks at hand effectively. Personal leadership development plans are beneficial when it comes to maintaining excellent leadership skills. With these plans, one can identify the qualities of a good leader and assess his/her skills against these qualities.
The intrinsic values in a leader will determine the decisions that one will make. These values define the default functioning of a leader. Values will only bring an impact when the leader takes effort to identify, understand, and apply them both in the workplace and personal life(Eikenberry, 2014). Values reduce stress, helps to guide actions, give clarity, and increase one’s ability to influence others.The value I consider to be of more importance in my life is integrity. I like doing things in the right way without cheating or defrauding anyone. It hurts when I hear a story of an innocent business persondeceived by unscrupulous dealers and endsup losing his/her entire fortune. The dealers think they have succeeded, but they have just limited their field of operation. Integrity will help in the long-term success of any business. When I stand on integrity, I will be able to make ethical decisions. When one maintains integrity, they can command respect from their subordinates(Enfroy, 2020). Honesty also creates a boundary and a filter of ideas that subordinates will bring up to the management. Integrity goes further to create a good reputation, which is critical for making progress.
Another value I consider myself to have embraced is humility. My friends are always thrilled with how I still find it easy to interact with people they believe to be of a lower class. I see leadership as an opportunity to be a servant of the people. The good thing about being humble is that it gives one a realization that there is no end to growth(Eastwood, 2019). I will never be self-sufficient, and therefore I need others to correct me. The issue is that no one will ever correct an arrogant person; they will just look as the proud person is making a mistake and laugh it off. A humble person is easy to correct and can, therefore, avoid making many mistakes. Humility gives leaders a chance to serve others selflessly (Enfroy, 2020). Subordinates find humbleleaders to be attractive, and they can easily support them in their initiatives. Humility in leaders is also vital when it comes to getting feedback.
In most cases, it is possible to let undesirable self traits get in the way of effective leadership. Authenticity is an essential trait in leadership; one needs to stay true to themselves in the midst of external pressure.Authenticity makes leaders stand out and makes them attractive. I consider consulting others as being true to myself and a means of creating good relationships. As much as leaders would want to have excellent work, it is essential to note that it is excellent workers that will do excellent work. A consultative style of leadership bankson involvingothers in the decision-making process(Ainomugisha, 2019). When workers are engaged in the process of planning, it becomes easy when implementing and delegating tasks. As a leader, I don’t want to be the one doing everything; I want to engage others and help them have a sense of ownership of the plan.
In leadership, it is unlikely that one will always know everything they need to know to make an informed decision. A consultative style of leadership offers help as leaders acknowledge theirdeficiency and inviteothers to assist. Leaders will also get extra information which will give them a clear view of the problems and help in solving them. Subordinates feel appreciated when consulted and are motivated to work even harder.
Helping others is my primary motivation. My goal is not just to achieve goals on myself. I want to walk along with others, see them grow, and even doing more than I can do. A candle never goes off by lighting another. With this attitude, I see questionsfrom others as an opportunity to serve rather than an interruption. Helping people will be essential in realizing their better selves. Helping others gives me a sense of happiness at the moment when I see burdens relieved from their back(Mars & Moses, 2019). In the long run, helping others gives a sense of meaning and purpose in life. This motivation helps in appreciating the two facets in a working environment: the worker and the work. Make an effort to have a good worker, and the job will be okay.
By maintaining integrity, I can help others build desirable behaviors. The subordinates will observe ethics not as a command butas a conviction of what is the right thing to do by following my work ethics.When it comes to developing subordinates, the style I have adopted of consultative leadership will be helpful. By creating a deep bond with subordinates, they can trust my leading and accept corrections without feeling degraded(Wilson, 2016). With an excellent working relation, it easy to give both positive and negative feedback to subordinates and still have their full support. With this style, it is also possible for one to be conversant with the needs of other workers and take the necessary action to offer a solution.
Another good thing that comes with this style is that new ideasare easy to implement. I can break out of the norm by trying out new ideas that I come up with and more so the ideas that I get from subordinates. As much as I would want to do things differently, I acknowledge the same also when it comes to the subordinates; they also want change. There is no better way to have this done than to have their ideas incorporated into new strategies.
Investing in a personal leadership growth plan is essential in achieving leadership goals both at a personal level and organization level. The assessment gives one a platform to come up with practical steps to take in achieving leadership goals. One can identify their current state, assess the necessary conditions of where they need to be, and make action plans. By following this, it is possible to lead subordinates into doing the same
