“The earth is all we have in common” is a famous quote, but very few have put it into perspective. However, some people, who Foer refers to as the climate change deniers, have refuted this claim. Foer then goes on to question the influence of people who accept that global warming/climate change is a result of human activities. Foer notes that these experts know the state of things about climate change and the causes as presented by the scientists their commitment to changing their actions for better earth is lacking. Contextually, this is because accepting what the scientists are saying would result in the willingness to make sacrifices towards adopting sustainable measures to address climate change. This observation means that we are all aware that global warming is what is ailing us but not committed enough to ending harmful human activities like pollution. Thus we can’t claim to know what is ailing us.
The storm
Foer is addressing a general audience. He is writing to the entire humankind to ignite them to wake up and act on the storm, which is a consequence of human activities and disruptions. Foer is aware that people understand there is global warming menace whose effects already too devastating and causing harm to them. However, he is wondering why no one is standing up to protest against the activities that are continuously degrading the environment, causing the unbalanced weather patterns that end up costing people fortunes.Fore feels that the experts in positions of advantage have what it takes to drive implementable policies to end global warming, but Foer sensed that they are too selfish to sacrifice; thus, they are deniers of what to protect. He believes that they are climatic saboteurs whose interest in to enrich themselves by all means without nature has entrusted them to care how it affects the environment and the world at large.
Foer is an exciting writer with a unique style of delivering his assage. His language is quite informal, and he uses a lot of metaphors and vivid examples to bring his argument into a relaxed perspective to the reader. He paints clear mental pictures using stories like that of Rosa Parks, who protested giving a bus seat to a white person. The tale of Karski, the bund leader who walked to Washington in June 1943 to meet the supreme court, Felix Frankfurter, to be allowed to clear the Warsaw ghetto and the extermination in the concentration camps and also his personal stories. He also told his personal stories one about his grandmother, who was so committed to saving her people that she had to leave her family behind and finally of his daughter, who reminded him of how lucky they were to be living. Foer uses a language of stories that people can relate to, awaken their conscience and get them into collective action. Maybe he uses this style of narrative because he feels people have casually taken climate change and environmental issues causally that they have lost their sense of seriousness. The author’s tone is calm yet quite sarcastic. It is ironic and sharp when he narrates how parents struggle to keep their kids out playing in the jungle, yet they feed them with sugars and fats, which are more dangerous to the health of the kids. At the beginning of the excerpt, he is also quite sarcastic about the audience’s knowledge about Rosa Parks and Claudette Colvin. The use of this tone allows the reader to look back and reflect on the deeper meaning of these issues especially climate change and global warming.
This excerpt from Foer is a reflective piece calling upon the human race to reflect and do the right thing towards environmental conservation. Failure to do so, the repercussions are going to be bitter that they are currently. He appeals to people to come from the position of knowing what is happening is wrong and rise to the occasion by taking proper actions to treat Mother Nature with care.
