- According to Robert Pape, suicide terrorism can be considered a strategic tool. Suicide terrorism is popular because they work; suicide attacks began as a form of religious violence but still, secular groups use this strategy because it is so effective. The theory of suicide terrorism developed by Pape states that a group of people occupied by a democratic power is likely to engage in suicide attacks when there are differences between the religions of the group and the democratic power. Pape adds that suicide terrorism gives a small group power to coerce large governments as suicide terrorist happens to be more lethal than those carrying other types of attack as they strike the greatest fear in the target audience (White, 2016). For a suicide terror campaign to take place there must be three-factor in place, this includes nationalistic or ethnic group which must be resisting the occupation of foreign power; secondly, the foreign power must have a democratic government, and finally, there must be differences in the religious of the occupying power and the people living under occupation.
- According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (DCP), the most threatening biological agents include tularemia, botulism, plague, anthrax, and smallpox (White, 2016). Smallpox is deadly and contagious while anthrax is noncontiguous bacterial infection and plague is transmitted by insects. Botulism, on the other hand, is a kind of foodborne illness and other bacteria can be modified to serve as weapons.
America has experienced two notable biological attacks since 1980. The first modern use of biological terrorism in the United States was engineered in 1980 by a follower of a religious group in Oregon. The group spread bacteria in area salad bars in an attempt to sicken voters during the local election; as a result, hundreds of people suffered food poisoning (White, 2016). America also experienced a biological attack for a second time; the second attack involved anthrax and came in the wake of 9/11. It began in Florida when two workers from a news tabloid were infected with anthrax received the mail; one of the victims died.
- Domenico Tosini believes that the link between suicide and religion has been disapproved because secular terrorist groups have also employed the tactic. However, religion remains a strong factor for many groups. When it comes to suicide decisions to engage in the suicidal bombing is based on the interactions of terrorists, supporters, and attackers within a surrounding social network (White, 2016). According to Tosini suicide terrorism develops when a culture accepts it an expression of altruistic martyrdom and when terrorist groups within the culture embrace the tactic.
Discussion Question
Laura Sjoberg is critical about the scholarly literature on women and terrorism; her research shows that studies of women in terrorism have been ignored and when females are discussed, it is in a gendered term. The world, instead of accepted that women involved in terrorist acts are terrorists, they end up terming them as women involved in terrorism. Although analysts and scholars agree that women play some part when it comes to terrorism, they do not define the role, and worst they do not care to do so. This is the same with media as women remain neither significant nor worthy of analysis; this creates the gap and also allows the terrorists to use women because women are rarely suspected as a terrorist.
Laura Sjoberg vehemently disagrees with such characteristics and urges that women do have a special place in terrorism and that women are terrorists just like men are. Sjoberg adds that there are terrorists who happen to be terrorists and have been around for quite some time. Sjoberg urges that there is no feminist perspective on terrorism, but rather there are feminists who study terrorism in a variety of ways. Scholars and researchers are reluctant to study political and criminal violence among women because doing so violates idealized notions of woman wood. Sjoberg concludes by urging that women’s behavior should be studied from a variety of feminist perspectives because such studies would enrich the field.
Yes, I agree with Sjoberg’s that the field would be enriched through feminism perspectives; this is because feminists perspectives will help in understanding as well as learning which tactics are used by women in terrorism. Enriching this field will also be beneficial to the governments being it will help in acquiring more knowledge about terrorist women hence develop the right tactics to fight it. More research and studies should be conducted on women’s behavior, as this will enrich the field of feminist perspectives
