“Unstuck in Time”
The whole concept is of “Unstuck in Time” in Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Slaughterhouse-Five, is Vonnegut giving a reflection of himself through a character named Billy Pilgrim. The story in the novel is complicated in that the readers find it difficult to understand the meaning of being unstuck in time. The narration starts by briefing readers about the bombed Dresden that marked the end of a war that the Vonnegut participated in. Afterward, he develops Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, a mental condition that is common in people who have participated in a fatal war or experienced horrific occurrences. In the process of battling PSTD, Vonnegut becomes unattached with everything, including time, a common symptom of PSTD. Considering that this is a real-life story, he finds it difficult to write it directly, and so he does it through a character named Billy Pilgrim.
Vonnegut takes the reader through a back and forth encounters throughout the novel to illustrate to the audience how real the story is. He does this to make it appear more of a fiction than a real-life story. The fact is that he is never in time traveling but having his life stage on replay because of the devastation that makes it hard for him to lead a normal life like other people. People battling Post Traumatic Stress Disorder tend to have strange illusions that make them lose touch in time. Therefore, telling the story out of order is him trying to let the readers understand what it means to be suffering from PSTD.
From my understanding, the whole novel is Vonnegut trying to give his understanding of the three things that are usually translated differently by different cultures; free-will, time, and death. Vonnegut portrays free will as something that doesn’t exist; this means that human beings can’t control whatever happens in their lives, not even death. The concept of the novel is a replica of other artworks, whose characters lead an already planned life. This is why the readers know everything about what happens in the novel even before they happen. Vonnegut says that free-will is the holder of life and death, evident from how it has controlled his life since he was young.
To try and explain why humans have no control over free will, Vonnegut, now Billy, narrates about how most things in his life have happened against his free will. First, he tells about his pool experience and how he got drafted to fight in the Second World War all against his free will. While at war, he wants to stay behind his two partners, but they force him to be at the front. This is when he realizes that he has no control over what he wants. His little belief of lack of free will is strengthened while in the land of aliens, who see things in four dimensions; two views of the past, and two views of the future. Basically, Vonnegut is saying that life has no free will; you live it as it is planned, not as you want.
Vonnegut also talks about the destructive nature of war. He says that war destroys not only physical property but also crashes the human spirit. He is captured right after the bombing and confined in a slaughterhouse where he becomes a prisoner of war. As a prisoner of war, he is subjected to digging human corpses and other life-demeaning things that make him develop PTSD. As he tries to solve the PSTD problem, he goes insane as the war experiences continue to bite him harder. This crashes his spirit that he no longer considers himself as a human, but an outcome of both planned and post meditated free will. This way, he loses connection with everything, including his family, and blames it on the lack of free will. Vonnegut says that all would have been okay if only he could dictate the course of his life. The context of battling PSTD makes the novel be understood as bearing a significant message.
In my opinion, Vonnegut is saying all this to emphasize to his readers on the importance of striving to take charge of one’s life and turn blind and death to theories that make life meaningless. Believing in theories that remove the power to take control of their lives from humans is the reason why catastrophes happen in the first place. Lack of free will pushes people into wars without having to give a thought of its possible outcome and the accompanying devastating effects.
