I fully support the two students. I think that anyone who identifies as part of the LGBT community deserves the same rights. LGBTQ rights include the right not to be excluded from employment, housing, public accommodations, medical care and the like. Another right is the right to marry. This has now been legalized in the USA, but many places still bar it. A fundamental right would be the right even to exist. In many places, gay or transgender activities are banned entirely, and violators are subject to imprisonment or even capital punishment. In Saudi Arabia, for example, even cross-dressing is a felony. For transgender people, the right to gender expression and gender transition are fundamental.
There is no reason to deny us any of the rights and privileges enjoyed by straight people. Just because I am attracted to and have sex with other guys, does not make me or any of less worthy. When we as a society deny a group of people who are not a threat to anyone and who are not harming anyone, rights or freedoms, we make it easier for the next line to be drawn. Prejudice, hatred and intolerance hurt us all. It is what keeps many of us in the closet for so long, but the closet keeps us out of sight; it does not make us go away. We all were taught when we were small that God created us equally, and we all also feel that God does not discriminate between us they why we do? Some of you may say that we do not discriminate any more, but an answer to a simple question will make you think again about this, do you behave normally with any person belonging to LGBTQ community.
