Impact of Violence on Women On Children

Impact of Violence on Women On Children

A significant proportion of women in most countries are usually subject to violence by their intimate partners. The paradox of a victim being abused by a member of the family whom they expect to have a supportive and respectful relationship results in long-term psychological consequences.

In most cases of abuse, children are usually implicated sustaining major physical injuries or long term psychological effects (Hester, 2007). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the impacts of intimate violence partner on children. The paper also proposes viable solutions for helping children who are victims of violence to recover from the trauma.

Intimate partner violence can be placed into various broad categories. Physical abuse refers to the intentional hurting by kicking, hitting or the use of other forms of physical force. Sexual violence involves the act of forcing a partner to take part in a sex act without their consent. On the other hand, psychological aggression and stalking are more passive forms of abuse but whose consequences may translate into a physical assault. These forms of violence are often projected on women at home, which then puts children at a higher risk of adverse effects on the face of these (Margolin & Gordis, 2000).

Children living in families where domestic violence reigns are at a high risk of adverse effects in several ways.In case an incidence of violence occurs on women, children are usually caught in between the aggression resulting in intentional or unintentional harm in the process. Children generally perceive the vulnerability of their mothers and may try to protect them from the wrath of their fathers. Studies have pointed at such incidences as the main channels in which children sustain physical injuries in varying intensities.

One consequence of violence on women is usually family separation, with most of themopting to move away momentarily before resolving the conflicts or permanently divorce. In the case where the violence is repetitive, children are usually forced to move frequently with their mothers for adequate care who may not be able to provide for their needs as adequately.  This may then result in psychological distress among such children. Women who opt to leave their marriages carrying their children along may expose them to undesirable living conditions while trying to save them from violence. Studies have illustrated that children living in shelters of battered women are often distressed due to them witnessing the violence and consequences on their mothers(Hester, 2007). Psychological impacts stem from the dislocation and family crisis, and this may negatively influence their behaviour or feelings which are long-lasting.

Products of violent families are usually reported to have higher incidences of trauma and related complications. When children witness aggression at its peak being vented to their mothers, they get the notion that violence is justifiable and thus exhibit traits of violence right from their early ages. Women are the primary caregivers and thus enjoy a strong bond with their children. If a child then witnesses their caregivers being battered, they develop an intrinsic fear due to the aggression and develop anxiety syndrome (Bradbury-Jones, Morris, Sammut & Humphreys, 2020).

Research has revealed that in their early ages, children growing up in hostile families show signs of depression and may suffer from trauma-related symptoms more than those who have not witnessed abuse or been abused(Hester, 2007). In such family environments, children usually feel responsible for what happens to their caregivers since they cannot adequately stop these acts of harm. They end up being confused about whether to hate their fathers (the abusers), fear them or hate them. Also, they might develop anxiety on whetherother violence will occur or whether they will be abandoned again. In many instances, such children may experience cognitive problems or ailments, resulting in issues in schools.

A research was conducted to understand how women abuse affected children in a low-income preschool. Children who had been exposed to an incident of violence depicted traits of post-traumatic stress syndrome such as nightmare, discomfort in class or bedwetting. These were again at a higher risk of health problems such as contracting allergies. In extreme cases, abuse of women trickles down the adverse impacts resulting in chronic mental issues of the children. They may also develop long-term delinquent behaviours due to exposure to battering(Margolin & Gordis, 2000).

Moreover, abuse of women has a direct relationship with the increased schooling costs for children coming from violent families. As a child grows, their characters usually depict their inability to fit in the standard schooling programs.Children who have witnessed their mothers being battered usually have short spans of concentration and their performance in schools may be diminished due to their divided attention in class. Most of such children end up in foster care due to their special needs while others have to be registered into juvenile justice systems of guidance sessions to help adjust their characters.

Intergenerational violence is the most extreme consequence of women battering on children. Men who use physical violence towards their partners often extend the same as a means of punishing their children.Again, women who experience violence at the hands of their partners may also resolve into physically punishing their children which propagates the vicious cycle of intergenerational violence(Bradbury-Jones, Morris, Sammut & Humphreys, 2020). Upon long periods of witnessing violence on women, children adopt defence mechanisms to tolerate this and see it as justifiable.  Consequently, such children often exhibit reduced empathy towards others, especially in their later stages. This means that they are more likely to perpetrate violence on their friends and later their future intimate partners thus extending the vicious cycle of violence.

How to treat children who are exposed to violence in their homes

As noted above, there exists a firm link between the abuse of women and the negative consequences upon their children. An initial step towards addressing the needs of the children is establishing a caring and trusting relationship with them. Apparently, such children may need extra attention to help them perceive this new relationship as different from the violent one at home(Finkelhor, Turner, Ormrod, Hamby & Kracke, 2016). Also, availing oneself, for instance, a teacher to listen to such children and giving warm gestures to them may shift in the children’s disposition towards others in a similar social setting. In the talks, however, the instructor should avoid making assumptions about understanding their children but replace these with questions as a criterion to understand the child’s behaviour.

In addition to this, it would be imperative to help eliminate the guilt exiting in these children of them being responsible for the battering of their mothers. It is essential to exercise patience as the children narrate their experiences and the reason for their guilt. The discussion should then be tailored to explain that children are not responsible for adult behaviour or taking care of their families(Finkelhor, Turner, Ormrod, Hamby & Kracke, 2016). This could be achieved by helping children understand who is responsible for the violent behaviour within their families. At this point, it is essential to model respectful behaviour by replacing the loud, harsh discipline with more gentle means such as speaking in a calm, clear voice to portray the importance of calm communication.

In a schooling situation, the instructor may resolve to hold discussions concerning healthy family interactions and conflict resolutions by helping children understand various emotions. This may change the perception or developed mentality towards the nature of families, thus reducing the propagation of a cycle of battering. Teaching children how to control various emotions will train them on signs of anger upon which they should refrain from closing up in their parents’ altercation to avoid being hurt. Schooling is the basic point of intersection and learning. The classroom should be enriched with anti-violence pictures which will paint violence as a vice, thus prevent its development among children. Strategies should be formulated to ensure the children watch nonviolent movies and develop a high self-regard. This will help children adopt in the typical classrooms and model character for their future lives. Studies have revealed that early behaviour modulation helps to discourage the development of delinquent behaviour among adolescents exposed to violence at an old age. More importantly, it is useful to keep the children informed on the places where they can get help such as child welfare agencies or hotlines on which they can report acts of violence(Finkelhor, Turner, Ormrod, Hamby & Kracke, 2016). From a treatment perspective, it is useful to conduct frequent assessments to determine the children’s mental status and accord them timely help.

In conclusion, it would be correct to state the existence of a positive correlation between abuse of women and the prevalence of negative consequences on children. Understanding this link would then point research to understanding the causes of violence among women which will then guide in the formulation of a prevention program to protect the children. Children usually experience a wide range of problems ranging from physical, psychological and emotional, which can be reversed upon timely realization.
