Humor is the quality of being amusing, comical, or funny. Comparing Nathaniel West’s humor to that of Evelyn Waugh’s, it is evident that in both novels, there is some sense of humor used. The text below compares humor found in The Day on the Locust to ones found in The Loved One.
The daily life on an individual displays humor in both novels. In “The Day of the Locust,” there is some humor around Tod Hackett. Tod is a young artist who had aspirations that one day, the Hollywood movie studios would turn him to something significant (West 1983). It is humorous that the reality would turn in Los Angeles, where Tod meets Faye Greener. A place where Tod had a very inner conviction about his life turns out to be all fake. The loved one, on the other hand, suggests that Man controls nature but also is subject to the same nature. As a result, death comes in to bring a balance. Dennis and Aimee worked at the cemeteries. Even though they got a job from there, it is funny that there had to be a death.
Both novels find humor in death. The storyline in West’s novel is full of some themes of depression that, at some point, instead of displaying depression, humor is seen. For example, “I am going to be a star someday… If I am not, I will commit suicide” (West, 1983). Nathaniel west used these words, not to show depression only but also to bring some humor. Death can never be an alternative to success. Even if appealing to the emotional domain, there is sarcasm in use since there is no way death and success are equal in that, if one is not successful, he or she should be dead. In the Loved one, Waugh displays humor from the introduction of his protagonist called Dennis Barlow. Barlow does a job at a cemetery for pets in which he calls The Happier Hunting Grounds (Waugh 2000). Dennis is ironic since, as asserted, the job was embarrassing but humorous when he terms the cemetery as Happier.
The novels use sarcasm and ironies to bring a sense of humor. In all the novels, humor is found from what seems to be not possible. West asserts that the use of sarcasm is describing California. As denoted, California is a land of sunshine and oranges (West 1983). Ironically, when the characters go there, they discover that everything is not as per what they thought. A sense of humor is detected here where again West suggests that California has got enough sunshine and oranges, but in the real sense, there is nothing more in California. In Waugh’s novel, Dennis’s friend called Sir Francis dies, and he plans to attend the funeral. The funeral took place at the famous and prestigious cemetery, Whispering Glades. Here, Dennis meets Aimee, who is a funeral cosmetician (Waugh 2000). Dennis falls in love with Aimee. The love here is humor at work since, this is a funeral, but some people, instead of mourning, they are falling in love. It is expected that since Sir Francis is Dennis’s friend, Dennis should be the one morning more. However, ironically, he is the one falling in love at his friend’s funeral.
In conclusion, both novels bring out humor in a very distinct way. Even though written by different authors, the humor of the novel could be compared. They both find humor in the daily phenomenon of life, death, and even in life scenarios that appear to be impossible.
