Teenagers are exposed to a lot of violence as well as interact with unknown people in chat rooms when playing online video games. Over time, these teens develop increased levels of irritation and aggression, which they did not have prior to playing violent video games. The huge amount of violence in these games affects the psychological state of mind of the teenagers who end up becoming complacent with the violence being shown. Most of the players of violent video games show signs of increased impulsivity, a reduction in social behavior as well as interference with normal cognitive functions.
Teenagers who spend a lot of time playing violent video games develop a false sense of confidence and power, which leads them to commit acts of violence against the societies they reside in. An example would be the mass shooting at the Saugus High School, California, which was committed by a 16- year old high school student. The shooting left two students dead and three others wounded. The culprit then shot himself in the head to avoid capture by the police. The high school student believed that by possessing a gun and shooting people, he would demonstrate his newfound power and also show authority figures that he did not respect them.
Violent video games cause violence in teenagers because they promote sexual and racial stereotypes. There are video games whose end goal is to rape a woman. After a while of being exposed to such content, teenagers end up normalizing the rape experience and then proceed to rape the women that they come across violently. Some video games instruct the players to kill targets of a certain race e.g., African Americans. This is one of the reasons why there are very many gun violence shootings in the United States against African Americans (“International Business Times,” n.d.).
Teenagers exposed to foul language and gestures in video games and chat room features also tend to be violent. These teenagers become rude towards their peers as well as authority figures such as parents and teachers because they have picked up and normalized the foul language of violent video games. Most of these teenagers, in turn, have reduced empathy as a result of drug and substance abuse (“NewsRx®,” n.d.). They start using drugs and alcohol out of curiosity, and in time, they get addicted and cannot stop.
Conclusion
Video games, just like movies and music videos, have a lot of violence in them and should be regulated by the law. However, it is the responsibility of parents to act as the first line of defense in protecting their children against such violence.
