Performance Art Analysis
This piece of art is called “Hand/Heart for Ana Mendieta,” produced by the artist Carolee Schneemann. It was a 1986 work that was motivated by the lossof a loved one. The art consists of three panels, whose two side panels are painted images echoing the hand/heart theme of the art. The central panel comprises photographs, where the main action persists. The center panels comprise chromaprints of the year of production- syrup in snow, ashes, and paint with blood. The side panels comprise ashes on paper, chalk, and acrylic paint. Its total size is 154” x 57” that consists of twelve triptychs, each measuring 12″ x 57″.
Formal Analysis
The first analysis is about space. The artwork forms an eye contact with viewers. The center panels form an eye contact with viewers, and the artist emphasizes the multimedia that forms a series of images. Viewers are also expected to move through the artwork to view the series of images. On texture, a first look indicates that it is rough. It is created by the use of snow, where shapes are drawn into using bare hands and the other materials. In color, the artwork displays a major color scheme. The dominating color is red, which signifies blood. The intensity of the red color in the center panels is strong. The artwork also displays the white color of the snow. The effect of the colors depicts murder or death. From the artwork, the easily identifiable shape is the heart shape. It reflects a visual language that denotes love. This visual language is appropriate since the artist was moved by the loss of her friend, which she chose to inspire this art to pay homage to the friend. Additionally, there is repetition in the shapes and forms. Repetition reinforces the idea behind the art. Also, shapes in the art are arranged repetitively to create visual interest. Another analytical aspect is the format. The art’s orientation shows that different parts are physically separated. This art is specifically shaped within a triptych.
Biographical Analysis
Carolee Schneemann started drawing while still young, and she cites it as a premonition about her future work. The artist recalls visiting the Philadelphia Museumof Art in her young adult years and felt a connection with art.In New York, Carolee met other artists like Morris, Cage, and Warhol, who were influential in her discovery of dance theater and happening that led to the fascination of the human body, and how it could form a canvas. Carolee’s work took off in the 1970s and 80s due to the choice of a sensitive subject matter, her body (Schneemann & Wallace, 2010). Carolee made the “Hand/Heart for Ana Mendieta” artwork a multimedia homage toAna Mendieta, her colleague, and friend. It was based on a dream she had about her friend after she passed away from falling from an apartment after a fight with her lover. After the dream, she walked to the snow, came back inside, and began drawingthe image she dreamt of. This dream would soon get choreographed into a performance, where the artist engraved the heart shapes in the snow using her hands and other materials.
This artwork displays a deep emotional attachment considering the use of heart and hand shapes drenched in blood. It is also a portrayal of deep feelings and a grieving individual after the loss of a loved one. It has much to offer beyond the incredible display of the panels. However, I think the art could have been made a bit wider to focus more on the details. The panels’ size could have been made larger. The artwork still deserves praise due to its arrangement and structure.
