Literature
Literature is one of the efficient used tools since time immemorial to hand knowledge from generation to generation. The dialect of research assumes every aspect of languages that makes it fit in all times, of which this is incorporated timelessness, a style used in literature. When garnering a literary genre, the author is prone to use vast techniques such as expository, descriptive, persuasive, and narrative. In the use of these styles, the author incorporates different stylistic devices to bring up his theme, which is mostly the specific objection of coming up with the piece of literature: these stylistic devices include allusion, conflict, colloquiums, cliché, diction, connotation, discourse epiphany among others. The history of research may trace upon times in remembrance due to the handing over of information through oral and written forms of knowledge. It can mainly be taken useful in ridicule, praise, or offer of advice to a particular perspective of the present time by understanding the past (history).
THE AUTHORS BIOGRAPHY.
Bartleby, The Scrivener, is a book authored by Herman Melville, who was born in 1918 in New York City. He schooled in New York City till the demise of his father, where he ended up becoming a sailor in 1839. He later started writing books, thus turning into an author living in 1845 after gaining enough experience through his adventurers’ life as a sailor, where he authored his first two novels. From retiring from marine life, the last docking in the USA, in the year 1944. He became an author in an error where there were no machines to duplicate written materials; thus, to get more copies, the author had to make handwritten copies (Diez 2015 170). He wrote many novels and poets before meeting his death in 1891 due to cardiovascular disease.
THE PLOT OF THE BOOK
The book plots in a law office in the mid-1800. The unnamed narrator: The Lawyer, enormously, dictates he is going to focus on a group of humanity as of yet unwritten about which he boost to know many. Still, it turns out that he focuses on a tale that he describes as the oldest one he has ever known. He first explains his office then makes a strange narrative of a character who portrayed to use the word “prefer not to” until his death, (Santa 2015 60)
THEMES PORTRAYED BY THE WRITER
The writer’s intention of writing a piece of literature, as I claimed earlier in the passage of themes to his/her audience. The antagonist who’s story term to be the backbone of the authors’ work is used widely as a tool for the writer to pass his message. To begin with, antagonists portrayed to be passive resistance. Bartleby, as he is named, is portrayed to repeat this phrase frequently, “I would prefer not to” this repetition cuts across all through the text. He uses the phrase in an increasing range as the story progresses. He refuses to do anything that he prefers not to do. The resistance is at fast staged as a fairly common capitalist struggle as the employer wants to utilize his employees to the level best as the employee (Bartleby) wants to do what he feels like doing. As to the society dictates, it is expected that when an employee and an employer differ, the employer greatly sucks the employee, or the employee quits the job. However, in this text, quite the opposite is seen as the employee becomes passive-resistive, which makes him employed, and yet working on tasks, he finds that they lie between his daily sets of acceptable limits. The story as it unfolds seems strange as the employee through resist to proofread neither to correct his work, sending him to the stores for errands, and talking about his personal life, not staying in the office and also not getting fired based on “preferring not to.” His passive resistance behavior is extended up to his death in the prison when he says that he prefers not to eat dinner. This passive persistence behavior of Bartleby aggravated the hostility and cruelty the world shows towards him. Passive persistence behavior is because irrespective of his hard work, the lawyer, (Harputlu 2016 203) terms him as a good for nothing employee (useless employee) due to his inactiveness in the noon hours. Thus, in the long run, the author may be portraying how society treats those who defer from its norms that have set as per communities, (Herman Melville 1856 9)
The second theme in this text is disconnection at the workplace. There are walls between the offices, thus minimal communication at the workplace. I this set up communication is poorly basic as portrayed by the relationship of the two employees that worked before the antagonist is employed. They seem to look comical both Turkey and Nippers, and they were told of being reproductive interchanging one being reproductive during the morning hours and the other one during the evening hours, thus trade-guarding in the office. Establishing how separate they are, they both work at the same place, but they are never in one way together. This act of lack of connection is deepened by the lawyer for failing to know Bartleby, his employee, since he employees him he learns nothing more about his worker’s personality other than his name or history. The disconnection fact portrayed in the name of the street the office located on Wall Street. This theme put across to show the effect of disconnection gap as Bartleby due to breaking in connection with his surrounding ends up committing indirect suicide, ( Dechene, 2018 200)
The other well-portrayed theme is isolation and non-reliability in the use of language in this text. In the beginning, the layer describes himself as an “elderly man” he must be knowing his age but presumably declines to tell. Yet, he goes beyond expectation as he describes himself as rather elderly. The word “rather” makes the opening sentence not specific. Isolation and non-reliability in the use of language leave the audience with the suspense of knowing whether the lawyer is old, middle-aged, or young. The lawyer also never reveals his name; he refers to employees by their nicknames in the exemption of Bartleby. The story, in the long run, lucks the creation of a two-way relationship between the author and the audience. The point exemplified as the story ends, the lawyer abruptly stops narrating Bartleby’s passive resistance and stuck in imagination describes his end and out of nowhere comes up with the rumors he had heard about Bartleby before working in his office was working in a Dead Letter Office, thus meant Bartleby had spent all his life destroying letters. The letters were meant through language to unite people by connecting them, of which he fails to do as his work ethics dictate. This theme is explanatory that, like Bartleby, everyone is a dead letter, with information to share but with none to share. isolation and non-reliability in the use of language may be the reason he concluded not to live because even if people may engage they and fail to communicate thus seizing and losing the meaning of life, (Couch, Daniel Diez 2015 9)
The other theme well portrayed is a charity beyond limits, which could be thought by man. The lawyer handles Bartleby in a manner that, according to men, dictates highly depicts as a charity. He fails to suck him and send him away when he finds that he stays in the office and turn, offers to help him. Even after he ceases doing any work, the layer does not fire him or reprimand him as expected, remains employed with the spirit of charity. The layer is all across the text colored to be charitable to Bartleby as he even after living him for new office after Bartleby becoming a treat to the business the lawyer comes for him when the next tenant is clearing, he offers him many types of jobs which Bartleby does not agree to take. Even after Bartleby sent to prison, the lawyer tries to bail him out and even pays the cooker to give a better dinner to him. at his death row, the lawyer takes the burdens for his death, yet he had not offended Bartleby in any way. Though the lawyer is portrayed as a charitable man, Bartleby denies all the offers given unto him by the power of “preferring not to.” This theme is placed for one to ask the question of whether it’s acceptable to limit one’s charitable acts in doing so as an in helping others and on doing humanity deeds (Herman Melville 1856 9).
In conclusion, we can say that the author has been able to create a very complex piece of literature, comprising many stylistic devices in the creation of his work. The styles include repetition, where the author keeps repeating the words “I prefer not to.” This phrase repeated more than twenty times. Repetition is, but one of the stylistic devices used to create this masterpiece of literature.
