In this study, the author asserts that the fear of flying is typically caused by other underlying fears such as the fear of losing control, fear of enclosed spaces, fear of passive waiting, and fear of relying on an unknown pilot’s mechanical judgment, among others. It is this fear that results in aggression in some passengers, thus making them become perceived as threats. The paper, therefore, examines the fear of flying from pre-flight checks to the conduct of passengers in-flight. It also discusses various national legislations that allow airplanes to refuse boarding for passengers deemed aggressive. Lastly, the paper examines the various international treaties that enable aircraft commanders to take necessary actions against in-flight offenses. This paper is essential because it informs my understanding of the underlying factors resulting in fear of flying. It also informs my understanding of why some passengers are denied from boarding a flight; and why some airplane crews take specific measures against aggressive passengers.

The article describes air rage as aggressive and disruptive behavior by passengers during a flight. The paper sought to find out ways in which air rage can be controlled and prevented. The authors hypothesized that air rage could be avoided if its causes are identified on time. The results of the study found that mental instability, environmental stress, and alcohol consumption during flights are significant triggers for air rage. The study also finds that 40% of air rage cases are alcohol-related, thus making alcohol consumption the most significant trigger. The study concludes by recommending flight companies to reduce the availability of alcoholic beverages in airports and airplanes. It also suggests a thorough evaluation of passengers before boarding and while in-flight. This paper is especially significant for my study because it helps to highlight better the causes of air rage, all of which help to understand better measures to take and how to prevent such incidences.
Cooper, H. H. A. (2002). Air Rage Is All the Rage. Journal of Police Crisis Negotiations, 2(2), 3-9.
In this article, Cooper raises concerns about air rage and the risk it poses on the safety of the flight and other passengers. The author argues that although no plane has been involved in an accident courtesy of air rage, the growing trend in passenger aggression may eventually lead to unforeseen disaster in the long term. Cooper argues that air companies and stakeholders have not placed enough attention to researching air rage and its prevention, and this may present future problems in the industry. He adds that many times air rage is compared to road rage, but these two are very different considering the type of vessel they occur in and the magnitude of damage they can cause. The article aims to prove that air rage can generate numerous conflicts and examines the way through which it can be resolved to avoid these conflicts. This article is significant to my research because it shows the magnitude of air rage as compared to road rage. It also draws attention to the potential disasters that can be caused by air rage, and why it is crucial to find ways of preventing disaster before it happens.
DeCelles, K. A., & Norton, M. I. (2016). Physical and situational inequality on airplanes predicts air rage. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 113(20), 5588-5591.
The article posits that people face social and physical inequalities in their everyday lives that cause aggression. This situation is similar in airplanes where there is an apparent physical inequality among passengers flying first class and those flying economy class. The researcher hypothesized that many passengers flying economy class might experience air rage because of the unequal treatment and the apparent difference in their physical space between the two classes. The study found that passengers who pass through the first-class cabin to get to the economy class cabin are more likely to exhibit air rage and aggressive behavior as compared to passengers who board in the middle of the plane to access the economy cabin. The study, therefore, concludes that physical designs in the airplane that highlight inequality trigger air rage. The study recommends flight companies to consider designing spaces that do not foster an air of inequality. This study is significant to my research because it brings out a different perspective on the causes of air rage and how to resolve it. It paints a clearer picture of how inequalities in seating spaces in stadiums can be related to unequal physical areas in flights.
