I was oncea student’s council treasurer. That is why I connect to this topic. I will include how I was in charge of the school’s fund and how we managed to buy a school bus as my experiences while serving under the docket.

Young people in schools have the right to be heard regarding their experiences in school. Policymakers internationally urge the young people’s contribution to both today’s and the world of tomorrow. Helen Demetriou’s study suggests that having astudent council is a way to respond to both the teacher’s and the students’ needs. It shows that the voices of students have the potential for harnessing the students’ thoughts and feelings, which will lead to effective teaching and better school experience. However, while her Hellen’s study is correct, it fails to address the fact that a student council is just but a service that deceives the students to think they have more power.

Student Council Importance
A student council is termed as a typical structure where students in high school can be involved in the school affairs, working together with the management, staff, and parents to benefit the school and its students. Notably, it is recognized widely that there is a need for young people’s voices to be heard; thus, the contribution of young people to the present and future world is urged by international policymakers. Teachers, schools, parents, and the communities are being challenged to listen to the children’s voices. This paper will discuss the importance or need of a student council at schools (Parisi et al., 2019).
A student council gives a student a stronger sense of membership where they feel more positive about their school, build a strong sense of self-worth and respect as well as being positive about themselves. Notably, the council gives the student an agency sense, for they are now part o the school matters contributing to the improvement of learning and teaching. As a treasure of the student’s council, I got to dedicate my effort and time in managing the school’s money and which led to the purchase of the school bus.
This was after the harmful budget cuts that the school faced. I was proud to have impacted the school for years to come as a leader in the students’ council. A school council also creates a practical agenda for change purposes, a thing which students can identify with. The changes build up a strong relationship between students and teachers and enhance the school capacity as an organization for learning. Notably, 90% of schools in the U.S have a student council, which ensures the smooth running of schools (Fleming, 2017).
The student council functions include: assisting the school’s inefficient governance, making sure that the decisions made in regards to the students have their best interests. Enhancing student’s educational opportunities is also included. Additionally, the council makes sure that the legal requirements are complied with (Jared & Thinguri, 2017). The board also deals with consulting the students on wide-school issues. Students are asked about the school rules if at all, there should be a review, needed qualities in a new teacher, timetable suggestions, and the student’s learning styles preference. By getting to know the student’s choices, a school can achieve its goals in terms of overall performance.
A student council is essential for it helps in the development of responsible attitudes in children, gives them hands-on experience in the national curriculum issues. Additionally, it creates a feeling of belonging, improves the teacher-student relationship as well as building a child’s self-confidence. The council gets to be part of the school’s strategic plans. It monitors the school’s expenditure and also aid in the approval of the annual budget. Withal, the most crucial part is that the student’s council is vital in the development, review, update, and monitoring of the policies of the school. By assisting the school administration in all this, the co-curricular and curriculum activities get to run smoothly(Veluchamy, Roy & Krishnan, 2017).
However, as much as it is essential to have a school student council, it does not get involved in everything regarding the running of the school. The commission does not manage the school’s daily functions; it does not discuss individual issues relating to staff, teachers, and parents(Molla & Gale, 2019). There is no representation of specific interest groups by the appointed school councilors. The council has no authority in the renewal of a principal’s contract or their dismissal. Withal, the size of the student’s council matters, and the head of the school administration staff must always make the councilors feel valued and be aware of the year’s vulnerable times.
