Introduction

A historical background provided by Trinh Vo (2003) indicates the unaccounted sacrifice and role played by Asian women citing the example of Vietnamese women. The first role of Asian women in a war-ridden country is providing for families that have lost their male figures. Vietnam, according to Trinh Vo (2003), is a country that has lost millions of men due to past wars. Vietnamese women mingled with American soldiers who later died in the war. Women are then left behind to take care of children. Due to the absence of male figures, according to Foo (2002), Asian women look for domestic jobs in their home country or in a foreign country like America. The domestic roles provide Asian women with money to cater for family needs.
Uncertainty of providing is influenced by class, as noted by Trinh Vo (2003). An Asian woman from a poor background marries an American soldier and ends up in an abusive marriage, and an Asian woman from the upper-class finds an academic husband and settles. This is not to say, however, that class degrades the critical role of Asian women.
Apart from playing the role of working to provide for their families, Asian women, according to Wanatabe (2008), is taking care of children. Although women experience new roles due to the absence of male figures, the primary role remains a priority. Asian women, according to Wanatabe (2008), are preferred for their exceptional talent in domestic work as compared to American women. By getting involved in household work to provide, firstborn females assume the role of mothers and take care of younger siblings, according to Foo (2002). For example, my neighbor left her eldest daughter to take care of her family in the Philippines. Apart from domestic work American capitalists, according to Trinh Vo (2003), Asian women are capable of handling jobs that require attention and monotony, e.g., sewing jobs.
Protection
One aspect of protection is sacrifice. Sacrifice in a traditional setting is an action associated with men because they head the family. However, according to Parrenas (2000), Asian and Asian American women are breaking the barriers of gender roles. Trinh Vo (2003) notes the sacrifice widows made for their families. One sacrifice was working in urban areas doing degrading jobs like prostitution to earn a living to support the family. Secondly, Trinh Vo (2003) notes an example of Nguyen, who slept with men to make money for her brother’s education. Additionally, she sacrificed funds to protect her brother from government conscription.
Considering my experience with feminism agendas, it is a surprise that Asian women’s roles in a family are equitable to male roles in the pre-modern and modern world.
