Analysis of Elsa in Frozen
Frozen is a movie that breaks the conventional concepts of “true love kiss.” Elsa is the main character, and who the series is about. Elsa is the epitome of being different. Everyone feels different for some reason or another. And sometimes, families of people do awful things to help contain that difference in a person. What makes her different from everyone else is her ice powers. They are what cause her parents to isolate Elsa in her bedroom after a childhood incident involving said powers. In as much as she had the ice powers that made her unique, she also had psychoanalytical factors that were not known to the public such as love for her sister, maturity, strong woman with capabilities of leading the kingdom, perfect for the role of queen, people pleaser, responsible, and selfish.
Elsa is a loving sister. But like most elder sisters, Elsa considers her younger sister as a kid, underestimates her, and does not share anything with her. She tries to take everything under her wings (Goh & Arianto, 2019). And when things were out of her hand, instead of confiding in her little sister, she ran away. Well, she had her reasons. I know she made bad choices, but she was a victim, and her mind was not working right. But the fact that she was able to keep her outburst to herself till the time she far away proved how strong she was. She did slip, but not completely. Keeping in mind, that was an outburst of so many years. She just needed some time to think straight. And when she did, she undid all the havoc; she could get all that chaos in her mind in place in just a few seconds of realization. All her fear was not that she would be harmed, but that others would be harmed from her. She was so concerned about others, especially about whom she loved. It is not easy for someone to shut down herself and stay away from people. Elsa did it but eventually came back after realizing she missed her sister, Anna.
Also, Elsa is a very mature, self-conflicted character who wants to remain alone in fear of hurting the ones she loves; she is a very cynical character in the start of the film, and at the end, she can chill a bit but keeps that mindset of maturity and has more common sense than Anna (Resene, 2017). Anna, in contrast to Elsa, is very much a daydreamer and wishes to find ‘true love’ and is childish in her fantasies. She is very bouncy and believes that difficult and complex issues can be solved relatively (the entirety of Arendale can be saved by her talking to Elsa). She has a poor world view due to her isolation, unlike Elsa, who developed a very fearful view of it.
Elsa as a strong woman
Elsa also demonstrated the character of being a strong woman with the capabilities of leading the kingdom. Western society assumes that women are focusing on relationships. If they are not in one, they are seeking one (Rogers, 2019). However, in life, many single women have not been actively searching, and they tell people that they get a lot of pressure to make that a focus in their lives. Elsa is dealing with ruling a kingdom and defending it from threats. In the beginning, her powers were threats. She lost her parents and had to assume leadership of a kingdom with no support. That is a hard task but as a sign of demonstrating a strong woman with capabilities of leading the kingdom. Elsa overcoming her fears and learning to accept herself means something different for each person. Some people use that as an example to find their courage. Some use that as a symbol of something they will never have. And others look at this with nostalgia, because it serves as a reminder of when they started accepting themselves. Such strong leadership characters made people start having the notion that she might be gay or in the LGBT community.
Furthermore, Elsa demonstrated perfect for the role of queen. This is attributed to the fact that she was morally upright, obedient, showed love for her parents and sister, as well as she, could do anything, even obey a childish view of her parents, to keep what she loved protected (Rogers, 2019). And if she loved her kingdom and her people, which she did, she can well rule her kingdom because her later choices in the movie, well, they do not exactly count as mature ones. But as I said, she was a victim. Also, she was so concerned about her family. The prime reason why she chooses to be alone was not to hurt others physically by her magic.
Other characters portrayed by Elsa include being a people pleaser. While doing so, she forgets to play elder sister to Anna instead shut herself in (Goh & Arianto, 2019). She fails to realize her blessings in disguise. Elsa had experienced a lot throughout the years; however, through her coronation, she hopes things to become better with time. He believes as well as positive minds get answered eventually, and she manages to see her sister once again. She forgets to live. Later, she does an abysmal job in letting everything go. Additionally, Elsa, as expected from every elder sister, is responsible, caring, and cautious. This made her shut herself in a room. Later she relinquished her throne and ran away for the safety of her sister and subjects. Moreover, she is very relatable as a character. Anyone can relate to her, as on some level or other most people are on a constant fight with themselves, trying to conceal something that would make them look bad to the outer world.
Elsewhere, Elsa demonstrated some form of selfishness in her character. For a couple of years, Elsa did not see her sister despite having the opportunity of getting to understand her better. However, she opted for locking herself in leaving Anna with no one (Goh & Arianto, 2019). I understand that she underwent hard challenges of life where she was, but that does not account for sufficient reasons for avoiding spending time with Anna as she could have reached her anytime. This implies that Elsa only considered herself over others, even the ones she loved.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Elsa is an exaggerated portrait of introversion. She is thoughtful, level headed, and extremely talented when left to her own devices, but genuinely overwhelmed by sustained contact with groups of people. Anna, her sister, also portrayed various adorable characters, such as being loving to her sister; however, Elsa was an unambiguously villainous character. As the story slowly evolved, they may not have noticed her likeability creep upon them. I expect Disney is an environment where extroverted qualities are precious, as in many other corporations.
