Means of communication have evolved over the years. Scientists and researchers have been out to look for the fast transmission of information over long distances with minimal resources in play. Better described by McLuhan as “the global village,” the Internet has eliminated distance as a factor hindering communication, allowing people and entities that were once considered too far apart to form mutually beneficial relationships. The paper looks at the Internet not as a mass medium, but as the core medium of evolution and communication transformation.
The Internet is defined as a global network of billions of computer networks that allows access to information and communication. It allows for the instantaneous transmission of data from any part and is accessed with connectivity to go online. The Internet enables a range of abilities such as communication, connection, learn, shop among other functionalities it has within it. Relatively fit into the sizeable hierarchical definition of traditional mediums of communication, the internet levels the plain field allowing everyone equal power and freedom with the advantage of immediate and direct feedback. The World Wide Web provides access to vast volumes of information within the Internet, while social networks such as Facebook allow for networking globally. One can also transmit a message through email or chat platforms, depending on the intention and context. An all these activities, to mention a few, are done at incredible speeds, allowing for instant updates and feedback.
The concept of the Internet is believed to have been coined by the military with the objective of constant and reliable communication networks in a nuclear attack. This is dated back to the Cold War in 1962, when its conceptualization as part of measures to protect national security (Hafner & Lyon). Other sources say it a theory laid out by Joseph C. D. Licklider, who interpreted computers birthing an era of citizen’s access to the government’s information and process, with computer linking allowing for giant teleconferences. He suggested that computers would have if not surpass the human brain capacity in the processing of data. The thesis is believed to have been the foundation in the expiration of computer networks. Later on, Paul Baran devised a packet-switching network, to produce a decentralized communication network that would allow access to planes and missiles in case of a nuclear attack despite location, thus launch a counter-attack. This formed the technological foundation of the Internet. Since Internet transmission required enormous processing power for connection, John Atanasoff, John Mauchly, and John Presper Ecker developed the first “full-service computers that were powerful enough to connect to the Internet. This then introduced the personal computer by Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Stephen Wozniak, inspiring IBM to develop the first personal computer. The computer networks further diversified in Local and Wide Area Networks. Social media came in later as a result of the social media revolution, thus creating Facebook.
As the Internet is in continuous evolution, many changes are seen to take place, architecturally and application-wise. Most of the process done over the Internet will be cloud-based, allowing infinite opportunities for scalability. The level of global networking will allow for virtual meetings, where physicality is duplicated and environments simulated with all aspects of reality incorporated to make the connection more vivid (Domingue et al.). All sectors look towards integrating technology within their current systems, to allow for seamless transfusion of data and process over the Internet. This will, in turn, bring about smart cities with sustainable systems for not only resources but also their inhabitants. However, this will come at a price as cybercrimes will substantially increase (Morris & Ogan). This will demand an improvement and deployment of better policies governing the use of the Internet.

The Internet’s world is evolving so fast, with developments and advancements in previous technologies in information technology on the rise. Some of these include Cloud Computing: networks of resources digitally available allowing for the infinite scalability of organizations and businesses, and Mobile Computing and applications where millions of apps and software are being created to simulate different functionalities in our daily life. Big data analytics and Automation where long, complicated processes and large sets of data are seamlessly processed to increase productivity.
The future also sees trends such as artificial Intelligence setting ground in the market. Its recent research and implementation in the health and security sectors have proven to be a worthwhile investment. Some examples include the US integrating AI in vehicles used for peacekeeping missions for repair. Other notable trends include Virtual and Augmented Reality.
